A Shame About the Final Game
It’s so sad that the story of this year’s final was an umpire’s horrendous strike zone. At times it seemed all he was allowing was a 7’ to 10’ arc or so. Maybe 7’-9’ it was so horrid. And even then, his consistency on that was way off too.
An ump at most rec levels should be looking for strikes, especially when there is no leeway as to where they land with the mat in place. To squeeze pitchers like that. What is the reason?! And after pitchers have labored through 4 games that day to get to the championship, to have that much taken away from them? And thumbs down to the umpire-in-charge for scheduling this official for the plate for the final game, as he has to know his tendencies and he doesn’t belong there.
It was a not pretty game with flustered pitchers, countless good strikes declared balls, long innings drawn out by walks that didn’t need to be. Pittsburgh is a good team and a worthy champion. Congrats to them, Penn State, and all the teams competing yesterday. It would have been nice to see what the result would have been last night with a fair, accurate strike zone.

Re: A Shame About the Final Game
Didn't see the final game but I'd be curious to know whether it was the same ump from the Wake/Penn State game.
Watched UGA/Pitt on the same field and literally 80% of the pitches in that game would have been called illegal if the same ump had been there.
It didn't affect the outcome of the Wake/Penn State since Penn State hit like crazy that game, but it's a little ridiculous to have zero illegal pitches in 4 straight games and then get called for 5 of them in the first two innings.
Hopefully it affected both teams in the final game equally in the final game.

Re: A Shame About the Final Game
It was not the same ump doing PSU/Wake as it was doing the title game. (I was the scorekeeper for PSU/Wake and then stuck around to watch the championship.)

Re: A Shame About the Final Game
Pitt's pitcher walked four in the championship game. He handled the umpire's quirky arc rule better than PennState's pitcher, who walked fourteen.

Re: A Shame About the Final Game
It truly is a shame that the poor quality of umpires changed so many games over the course of this tournament. Several umpires displayed consistently poor judgment and others had seemed to have issues with the enforcement of both ASA and CAN rules. I'm not sure if it's a requirement that CAN utilize Goddard umpires as part of renting the facility, but we should try to find different officials for future tournaments if possible. As someone who has umpired baseball games for years, I take no pleasure in criticizing the officials. However, they are receiving compensation for umpiring these games, so we should expect adequate officiating in return.
