2013 Tournament Primer, Part III -- PREDICTION TIME!!!

So as previously mentioned, since 2002, only one team has won the CAN softball tournament without finishing in the top sixteen the previous season: James Madison won the 2008 tournament after finishing tied for 17th the previous year. Odds are strong that this year’s champion will come from one of 2012’s final sixteen teams. So, sorry to: Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Tufts, Boston College, Xavier, Florida, Villanova, Ohio State, Illinois, William & Mary, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Penn State, Providence, Bucknell, Auburn, Colorado, Michigan, Texas, Indiana, Rutgers, Syracuse, Cornell, Washington, UMass, Stanford, Cal, Delaware, Michigan State, Navy, Arizona State, Johns Hopkins, Dayton, GW, George Mason, Elon, Yale, Clemson, UConn, Georgia Tech, Kansas, South Carolina, Embry-Riddle, Carnegie Mellon, NC State, Tulane, LSU, Arizona, Utah, Boston Univ, and Miami.

No first year team has ever won the tournament: Sorry, Catholic.

And we also know that no team has ever finished the regular season undefeated and gone on to win the tournament: Sorry, Richmond.

No tournament champion has ever finished the regular season with a losing record. So, sorry, Emory, West Virginia, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Eleven different seeds have won the tournament in the last eleven years -- #2, #4, #6, #7, #11, #15, #16, #18, #25, #34, #37 – so it stands to reason that a twelfth different seed will win this year. So, sorry Maryland (#2), Central Florida (#6), Virginia Tech (#7), Georgia (#11), North Carolina (#25), and James Madison (#34).

So now let’s dig a little deeper, and start in on the NINJAmetrics. Texas A&M in 2010 had the worst Offensive Relativity (at #24) rating of any champion in the history of OR (or, 6 years). So, sorry Vanderbilt (#37 OR) and Wake Forest (#42).

[REDACTED] the 2006 tournament after playing the 23rd toughest schedule in the regular season, the worst of any champion in the history of SOS data (or, 8 years). So, sorry American (#33 schedule) and Texas A&M (#54).

Sooooooo, who does that leave?!?

Ohio…??? EXCEPT. Only one tournament runner-up in the Modern Era (or, since 2002) has ever come back and won the whole thing the next year. In 2004, Maryland defeated [REDACTED] in the championship game; [REDACTED] returned in 2005 and took home the Primrose Cup.

Hmmmm……

What is this Harry Potter? What did Colgate do that causes them to be worthy of not being named? Please enlighten those of us who enjoy tales filled with sordid details.

Colgate. To make a long story short, they used ineligible players and won the whole thing. Seriously, cheating at a rec league softball tourney is just plain awful. They were subsequently kicked out of the league afterwards. They did try to make amends and played a feew years back, but have since not fielded a team.
