posticon 09 Softball Preseason Stats

Okay - here is the first set of stats for the new softball season. Apologies for dropping everything in the winter for football. I really have no excuse since CAN stats should clearly be my first priority in the day. emoticon

Anyway, I've compiled some data to help fuel the strongest/weakest division argument. I've formatted things a bit differently this season - mostly becuase I have a new laptop with Vista on it. Hopefully, it'll look a bit more aesthetically pleasing. I'm also going to be using ImageShack for image hosting, so if you can see it, cool, if not, then blame your ISP or IT department for blocking it. And no, I'm not emailing it off to you.

I plan on doing the same stats as the last two seasons - if you have any other stats, I'd love to hear from you to see if I can add to the ones that I have here. Just PM me if you have ideas.

Anyway, the first graphic below compiles everyone's record from last year, their tourney record, and their overall record. The teams are ordered alphabetically for convenience. Obviously, with Connecticut, Kansas, and Rutgers not playing last season, they've got blank lines. Teams highlighted in BLUE won divisions last season, and James Madison is highlighted in their purple to denote their well-deserved tournament championship at Primrose Cup XII.

The second graphic orders the data by division, to include the color coding. I have also totaled and ranked each division's performance in the records as denoted above.

Some interesting thoughts that I had:

* Tourney records are very skewed since most teams finish with below .500 records. In other words, for every JMU, you need an American, Arizona, Baylor, and BC to balance them out. I know it may seem obvious, but I didn't notice it.

* Let's take the time to applaud, once again, Tufts and Bucknell's runs through the loser's brackets - they played 10 and 9 games, respectively, in the tourney. Amazing endurance and great fight. Here's to hoping that MD doesn't draw Tufts again. emoticon

* The Ripken and Gehrig divisions do not have teams that won divisions last season. Could this be the season that Ohio snags a long-awaited crown? Apparently, finishing 13-1 last regular season wasn't enough. Good luck to the fightin' Rufuses... er, Bobcats.

* The Mays division has both the highest regular and overall winning percentages. However, only W&M made any significant noise in the tourney (taking JMU to extra innings). Paper tigers? A chaotic division where anything could happen? P'shaw - the money's on the division going to the Wake-W&M winner.

* Maryland and Penn State get drawn together as the only divison with two division winners from last season. Is that game winner pencilled in as the division winner?

* Despite having the lowest regular season and overall winning percentages, the Schmidt division has 'Nova, Michigan, and Minnesota.... that'll be a fun division to watch.

* Speaking of which, how about the Berra division - G'town, UNC, A&M, and VT. This may be the most even top half of a division this season. If anyone runs the table, they'll certainly deserve their lofty seed.

Oh crapola - I just realized that I've already made my first mistake. Wake finished last season 12-2, 2-2, 14-4. While this does change the numbers for the Mays division, slightly, the ordinals stay the same.

Apologies to the Deacons.

Eddie, I have all the scorebooks from last year's tournament if you feel like running a statistical analysis on all of them!!

...you know...because you have nothing better to do.

... while tempting, I'll decline. The '07 set of books were awful - seriously, there were a lot of people who had no idea how to score a game.

Plus, I want to attempt to have a life. Hopefully. Not sure if it'll happen, but I'll try. emoticon

Ninja,

Huge thanks for compiling all the info. to breakdown the new division alignments. And thanks for giving props to those teams who had to make deep runs in the losers' bracket in last year's tournament, including Bucknell and Tufts. But I think Auburn should also be mentioned alongside those two teams. I think we cobbled 6 straight wins on Sunday before Pitt took us out, and had a 7-2 overall tournament record.

The Ripken Division may not have any division winners from '08, but it still looks very competitive. That said, Ohio is probably the team to beat. Lookin' forward to it.

SLACKER!! I mean seriously, you don't want to look through 10 scorebooks full of bad scorekeeping? I really don't understand!!

You are absolutely correct. Apologies for the oversight.

Re: 09 Softball Preseason Stats

And I'm back.

With schedules soon to be released (insofar as knowing you you're going to play and not necessarily when), I thought I might check out some statistics on how team schedules look like with regards to last season's records.

To answer a few things right off the bat:

* Yes, I know who plays who.
* No, I won't tell you who you play out of conference.
* No, I don't know when it's going to be released to coaches, etc.
* No, I won't go "off the record" and give you info - regardless of bribe. I gave my word that I wouldn't share the team info, period.

What I did was total the regular season and overall records of teams on each teams' schedule and then divy them up into Overall, In Division, and Non Division sub-sections. Please note that the teams's opponents's records will not add up to a common number because 1) some divisions have different numbers of teams and 2) Rutgers, Connecticut, and Kansas do not have records to reference.

The SOS and their associated ranks, which you'll find on the far right, is calculated as is accepted - 2/3 opponents's winning percentage and 1/3 opponents opponents's winning percentage. For comparison, I've also included the ranks of the total opponents's records.

Also, the SOS calculation is slightly off as I included games between the calculated team. Said another way (since even _I_ don't understand what I just typed), let's look at Arizona. 'Zona played Arizona State as part of the Grand Canyon State Derby (soccer reference) last year. In calculating 'Zona's SOS, I would normally include ASU's record minus the result of the 'Cats-Sun Devils game... but I called no mas on my Excel machinations - ASU's full record is used. I believe that the discrepancy is minor, but I'm giving you full disclosure.

Any questions, just let me know.

**EDIT: 1:20AM... sorry, I used the wrong formula for SOS... I was using third-order effects. My bad. It's been fixed. Thanks to DJ for first pointing out something amiss.**

Re: 09 Softball Preseason Stats

I hope to have a spreadsheet up on the website by Thursday that includes:

1. everyone's full list of games (including the computer picked games)

2. The first 3 weeks of the season

I'm still trying to tie a few loose permit-related ends up before I can start the full scheduling process.

What I can say now, though, is that we're going to be going rather light on games the first 3 weeks (probably only 3 games/night), so be prepared to have a bit of gap between your first and 2nd game. Figured I'd do that to save everyone some fieldsaving and make the most use of the permits as possible.

I'm also expecting just about everyone to field save 1 time this season and hopefully that is it.

Still expecting this to go up today or has the ETA changed?
