Numerical rankings

Since apparently there is no longer a coaches poll, I decided to play around with some numerical rankings. I realize there are many ways to do rankings. For example RPI does “0.25winning percentage + 0.50 opponents winning percentage + 0.25 opponents opponents winnings percentage”. That last term is a pain to calculate, so I didn’t (I’m lazy). But I don’t think in a league this size it’s that important because each team will play roughly 20% of all teams. Anyway, I’ve done two methods here.

1) Winning percentage + opponents winning percentage
2) Winning percentage + .50opponents winning percentage

I think #2 works a little better.

I’ll try to update this once or twice throughout the season. If I’m really ambitious, I may add in a third method (which includes opponents opponents winnings percentage).

Method 1

A statistical problem with method 1 is demonstrated in the case of Florida (no offense to the Gators).

Their extremely tough schedule is given a little too much weight here elevating them to #4 with a 3-2 record.

Method #2 addresses that issue by making actual wins more important (rather than equally important) than SOS.
