It'll be a colossal upset if UMass beats UGA. Massachusetts has one win over a half decent team (BC) in the last two seasons and they avoid playing good teams like the plague.

If they get into Pot 1, everyone will be wondering if they will get out of their Pod.

pardon my ignorance in this subject, I am neither a coach nor involved in the management of a team. I was under the impression that the league created the schedule, and teams were only able to choose a handful of games that they, along with the opponent, both agree to.

So basically how much control does a team have over their opponents outside of the division games?

Usually five to seven of their games.

Your in-divison folks are picked for you. However, an out of division slate that has included Rutgers (x2), Xavier, Connecticut, Providence (x2), Boston College (x2), Virginia, Washington, Georgia, Arizona, LSU, Duke, Tulane, and Delaware over the last two seasons looks awfully soft.

They could easily just be friends with all those teams, mind you (I'm sure BC/Prov is a local rivalry-type thing). I'm clearly generalizing. However, you're not going to get a lot of respect on your team's softball quality if your out of division strength of schedule is in the 60s with no marquee wins.

thanks.

But let's be honest, everyone wants to play and beat Duke, because after all, everyone hates them anyway.

Of course. I still seethe at the 2001 basketball tourney semifinals.

That being said, they certainly are friendly drinkers.

As I wallow in my celebration of National Fried Chicken Day, and as a defacto apology to neutron man for my PDF tardiness, I decided to see what the Pods would look like if the season ended last weekend (e.g. games from last night are not considered).

Further, this might help to give some mental framing for those that are having trouble with the concept of a group stage.

This is what I came up with. Please note that there was no attempt to implement tiebreakers. My food coma is preventing any sort of advanced thought.

First thing that popped ot to me was Pod B. If Indiana and Tufts are anything like they typically are in the tourney? Ha. Watch out Richmond.

Clemson will clearly win Pod D after beating up on MD.

Cinderella from last season, Notre Dame, has Ohio and Rutgers in their Pod.

Pod J also has some interest if the 'good' Florida shows up. Also, if 'good' Syracuse shows up, Pod O could have some shenanigans.

Ok, i can't believe I need to response to a post , regarding why my 10 guys/girls haven't played against better 10 guys/girls.

I'm the coach of the UMass team, I make the divisions selections, and take full responsibility for whatever crap is said against us.

To be clear, I do not book the schedule based on who we can get wins against.....we had a decade of crap teams, with us being the 70th worst team in the league.....

I book based on teams we enjoy playing (i.e., drinks, party, etc.) and teams that have some geographical or college related relationship. Hence the selections of Tufts, BU, BC, Providence, Xavier (A-10), UConn, Delaware, etc.

Outside that, playing Arizona is a tradition (been playing them for over 6 years, before we had any talent) and Rutgers, mainly because they kicked UMass's and Georgia's ass a few years back in the tournament and their a good team to party with.

Outside that, the rest is on the league. My apologies if we beat who we are suppose to and lose against the tougher opponents, it's clearly a roadblock we need to pass. BUT, don't take away from the teams we played. A good amount can make (and have made) a run. AND DONT SUGGEST WE ARE PADDING A SCHEDULE FOR A CO-ED ALUMNI SOFTBALL TEAM, in which most of the players (including us) hope to get the game over as fast as possible so we can drown our sorrows in alcoholic beverages. Seriously, the most retarded thing I ever heard.

SO whatever pot we get in, it's all for flavor, someone from a weak pot will get hot, others will fall. Happens every year. We get in the Top Pot, great.......if we don't, no worries.

And, finally if anyone wants to play us, this year (scrimmage) or next, I'm all for it. If anything, we're fun to play.

Just have some fun with this.

I don't think anyone was insinuating that, and I also don't think anyone would fault you if you WERE intentionally scheduling lesser teams to win more. But, as Eddie rightly points out, the way to be viewed as a top team in any league is by beating other top teams. There was a time when one could have said, "it'll be a colossal upset if UGA beats <insert top team here>," but after a top 3 finish last year, I doubt anyone would say that now.
